Choosing a transfer university for Computer Science

It can seem impossible to choose. Davis? Some other UC? Sac State? Some other CSU? How about private universities like Stanford or UOP?

Is it easier to get a professional programming job if you graduate from Davis? Berkeley? Chico State?

How does the GPA from different schools compare? Is a 2.2 GPA from Stanford considered better than a 3.5 GPA from Sac State?

My experience

I graduated with a BSME (Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering) degree from the University of Oklahoma. OU has great men's and women's basketball, gymnastics, baseball/softball, football, etc. teams. But it's not as highly ranked academically.

OU is very similar to Sac State academically.

I studied hard at OU and earned a high GPA. That earned me a pretigious first job in New Jersey working for the Department of Defense. My hard work at OU then got me into Berkeley for graduate school where I was paid to get a Masters degree. Yes, Berkeley paid me to go to school and get a degree.

And I was able to accomplish all that with a Bachelors degree from a school similar to Sac State.

My advice

You need a university degree in Computer Science to work as a programmer.

Go to the university that lets you graduate in the shortest time. Starting at Los Rios means that Sac State or Davis let you finish the quickest.

Sac State and Davis accept CRC courses for transfer

CRC works very closely with Sac State and Davis. They accept our Computer Science, math, science, and IGETC courses as the first half of their BS degrees.

Other universities will not accept all CRC courses for the first half of their Computer Science degrees. Transfering to somewhere besides Davis or Sac State will add at least a semester, and often a year, to your university graduation date.

UC-Santa Cruz, for example, does not accept all of the Computer Science courses from CRC. They make you take their version of the course after you transfer.

I'm happy to speak with you if you're considering a different CSU or UC. We can talk about the risks of transfering to a different campus.

If you're thinking about transfering to a private university then I would explore the UC and CSU campuses instead. A Computer Science degree from a private university is a poor investment. You pay far more for the degree and you learn the same thing as at a UC or CSU campus.
