Online Orientation for Math 100:

All students are required to complete this course orientation.

By Saturday, January 15, 2011, students must have completed the following three things:

1.    Prerequisite Verification

In order to remain enrolled in this course you MUST provide me with proof that you have passed the prerequisite course, Math 30 (Prealgebra). If you have taken Math 30 at CRC (or at another COLLEGE), you can send me a copy of your transcript (unofficial is OK). If this is your first college math class, then you need to take the assessment test and place into Math 100. You can fax this information to me at 691-7142 or 691-7521, e-mail the information to me as an attachment, or slip it under my office door LRC-157. Do this as soon as possible as I need your proof by Saturday, January 15, 2011.

A high school transcript CANNOT be used as a prerequisite nor can a transcript showing a non-passing grade for Math 100.

Rember that without this verification you cannot stay in the class even if your did enroll at CRC or completed all the other parts of this orientation. This must be done first.

2.     Complete the orientation process

After having read ALL of the information about this course (course schedule, textbook, grading and exams, homework, quizzes, pencil and paper), answer the 6 questions below.

Please e-mail me the answers to these questions at stewarl@crc.losrios.edu

    1. What is the deadline for test #2?
    2. What is the name of the text, the authors, and the edition?
    3. What is the minimum score required on Test #1?
    4. How many times may homework problems be repeated?
    5. How many times may each quiz be taken?
    6. When are pencil and paper assignments due?
    7. What is the minimum score required on the final exam in order to get a grade of C or better in the course?

3.    Complete the online course registration into Course Compass (MyMathLab).

Purchase access to online course materials in one of the ways listed in the Textbook link. The course ID is stewart54336. You must get yourself registered into the Course Compass site by January 15, 2011 in order to stay in the class. I will drop students not actively working on site by that date.

Once you have registered for the course, browse the website to see all of the methods you have for learning the material. Click on any of the links at the top: Features, Getting Started, etc. The site has instructional videos, powerpoint demonstrations, step-by-step examples, practice problems, study plans, and more. You will decide which is most beneficial for your style of learning. All of the instruction is found by clicking on the tab Chapter Contents.

Other information regarding the class:

Follow the weekly schedule (go to the link COURSE SCHEDULE in my website). It is crucial that you follow this schedule and keep up with the material. You must not get behind on the schedule. You can be flexible with the schedule of when the assignments happen during each week, but you must have the self-discipline to make sure that it does happen each week. You will not finish the course if you get behind.

All homework is done within Course Compass. Just click on the tab HOMEWORK, then choose the section that you are ready to work on. For more detailed information about homework assignments, go to the HOMEWORK link in my website. Homework scores will be recorded on exam days and no additional homework credit can be earned after that exam date.

All quizzes are also within Course Compass by clicking on the tab TAKE A QUIZ. For more detailed information about quizzes, go to the QUIZZES link in my website. Quizzes can only be taken twice and scores will be recorded on exam days as with the homework.

Each week you will have 2-3 pencil and paper assignments which you will print out and complete by hand, clearly showing all of your steps. These are intended to check for understanding of the major points, integration of topics, and to practice showing your work on paper – skills critical to success on the exams. For more detailed information about pencil and paper assignments, go to the PENCIL AND PAPER link in my website. These assignments will be submitted when you come to take your exams and will be graded for completeness.

Please e-mail me at stewarl@crc.losrios.edu if you have any questions or need clarification.
