Fall Schedule 2009

CISN 300 is designed to prepare students for CompTIA's Server+ certification exam (http://certification.comptia.org/server/default.aspx). Many corporations recognize the importance of IT staff, who can competently perform basic server support. Some of the topics covered in this course include RAID, SCSI and multiple CPUs, as well as other capabilities with servers, including disaster recovery. Some of the operating systems covered in this course include Windows Server 2008, Linux and Novell.

 

·         CISN 300 Network Systems Administration--3 Units

·         Prerequisite: None

·         Corequisite: CISC 323 and 356.

·         Advisory: CISC 302, 308, or 310.

·         Hours: 45 hours LEC ONLINE; 27 hours of ON-GROUND LABS (Mondays from 5:30PM to 8:50PM in BS-153) Note: If you have the hardware and software to complete the labs at home it is fine with the instructor.  For further details contact Professor Parks at parksl@crc.losrios.edu.

·         Description: This course covers the administration of a server in a client/server network. Topics include designing a basic network, installing and configuring a network operating system, managing network security with user and group accounts, creating directory structures and network shares, setting up and managing network printers, backing up servers, monitoring and troubleshooting network resources, and establishing policies and procedures for network operations. Students may receive three units of credit for each new version of an operating system offered or for a different operating system offered. Consult the class schedule for specific operating system offered. This course may be taken four times for credit.

CISS 310 follows CompTIA Security+, which is recognized by the technology community as a valuable credential that proves competency with information security. Major corporations such as Sun, IBM/Tivoli Software Group, Symantec, Motorola, Hitachi Electronics Services and VeriSign value the CompTIA Security+ certification and recommend or require it of their IT employees. This course is only offered once per year.

 

 

·         CISS 310--Network Security Fundamentals - 3 Units

·         Prerequisite: CISN 330 with a grade of "C" or better

·         Hours: 45 hours ONLINE LECTURE and 27 hours of ONLINE LAB (Note: you may drop by the college on Tuesday nights to work on the labs as well (5:00 - 7:00 PM in BS-153)--more details to come during the Orientation.

·         Description: Organizations today are linking their information systems across enterprise-wide networks and Virtual Private Networks, as well as increasing their exposure to the Internet. Each connection magnifies the vulnerability to unauthorized access. This course provides the fundamental knowledge needed to analyze risks to the system and implement a workable security policy that protects information assets from potential intrusion, damage or theft. Students will learn which countermeasures to deploy to thwart potential attacks. This course will also prepare students for CompTIA's Security+ Exam.
