Interactive Television:
Guidelines and Frequently Asked Questions

Classes are held in Room L-112 (on the bottom floor of the CRC Library) or you can watch on Comcast Sacramento Cable, SureWest Cable, and on the Internet at crc.losrios.edu/de then click the"Connect to Your Class" link (you will need the free Real Player (www.real.com) application loaded on your computer).

For more information, read below or call (916) 691-7149 or (916) 691-7289.

Tips for Success:

  • If attending class on campus, show up as you would for any other class.
  • If watching from home, call in for attendance at the beginning of each class session (including the first day of class). Have your name and Student ID # ready for the operator. The attendance call in number is (916) 691-7600 or toll free (800) 253-5262.
  • Be ready to call in to participate via phone. Please turn the volume down on your TV or computer. You will hear your class on the phone.
  • Use Internet Explorer as your browser if you are going to watch class live online. Other browsers (like Firefox) will have problems accessing the video stream.
  • If you are going to view class sessions from home on a regular basis, you will need to be placed on a mailing list to receive class materials. This must be done during the first two weeks of the semester. Call (916) 691-7149 to be placed on this list (do not leave a message) or you can register via the web.
  • If you plan on attending on campus most of the time, pick up class materials in the Distance Education/Media Center (L-125).
  • If you happen to miss a class, you can view it with the free Real Player software download (www.real.com). Go to your class Blackboard site and access the video link. Archived classes will be available to view for the rest of the semester. You can also visit the CRC Library on campus to view archived recordings.
  • There may be a window to take exams. Your instructor will give you detailed information.
  • All exams must be taken on campus. Click here for CRC testing information.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why should I call in?
Students should call in to register attendance, ask a question, respond to the instructor’s question, and participate in a discussion.
  • When should I call for attendance?
You should call in at the beginning of class, or when the instructor requests it.
  • What number do I call?
The classroom call in number is (916) 691-7600, or toll-free 1-800-253-5262.
  • Must I call in for every class session?
Yes. It is strongly encouraged, but only call in when you are actually watching the class.
  • How do I talk to the instructor?
After registering for attendance, you may talk to the instructor anytime. You must be registered and listed on the roster. Once your registration is verified, the operator forwards your call to the instructor. Please remember, it may take a few seconds for the instructor to respond.
  • Can someone else call in for me?
    No.
  • My name isn’t on the roster yet. Can I still talk to the instructor?
Your name and attendance will be taken, but you can’t be connected to the classroom until we verify your registration. This will be done within a week of registration.
  • I’m videotaping the class because I can’t watch it live. If I call in during class, but I’m not watching, does my attendance count?
No. You must be watching the class to receive credit for attendance. If you are taping the class the instructor must approve your absence as in any other class. We do not encourage taping, except for reviewing purposes.
  • Can I talk to the instructor anytime during class?
Yes! You may call in anytime during class to talk to the instructor or to ask a question.
  • How do I turn in my assignments?
You may turn them in at the Media Center. You may also mail or fax your assignments to the instructor. To fax your homework to the instructor, include a cover letter identifying your instructor’s name, the class, and the assignment’s title. Fax it to (916) 691-7476. To mail assignments, address your envelopes:
         (Your instructor’s name)
         c/o Media Center
         Cosumnes River College
         8401 Center Parkway
         Sacramento, CA 95823
  • How do I get my class handouts?
If you watch at home, you may choose to be on the mailing list. To do so, call the coordinator at (916) 691-7149 (please do not leave a message). This must be done by the end of the 2nd week of the semester.
  • What is the mailing list?
The mailing list is a group of students who will be watching the class from home more than 50% of the time. It is not for students who will be viewing from home occasionally throughout the semester. Students on the mailing list will receive new and graded assignments, given by the instructor, through the mail. Once you are on the mailing list, all assignments and correspondences with the instructor will be done by mail. Media Center clerks will not withhold items for pick up once you are placed on the mailing list. Students interested in being placed on the mailing list call (916) 691-7149. You can only sign up for the mailing list during the first two weeks of the semester.
  • How do I know what book I need for class?
The bookstore lists books by course code. The instructors also list the required text in their syllabus.
  • My campus bookstore doesn’t have the textbook. What do I do?
Contact the CRC bookstore and request a copy. If they do not have one, contact your instructor.
  • How do I know when there is an exam?
Your instructor may list the test dates in the syllabus, but they will also announce test dates during class.
  • How do I take an exam?
You may take the exam during the scheduled time at the main campus. If you can’t be on site at the scheduled time, instructors offer a window that usually includes the two days/evenings prior to the exam. No exams will be given after the scheduled day/time without approval from the instructor. Be sure that you understand the testing policy of each of your instructors. Click here for CRC testing information
  • How do I get the results of an exam?
They will be mailed to home viewers on the mailing list if provided by the instructors. Otherwise, contact your instructors.
  • What classroom is the class in?
On the CRC campus, class is held in L-112 (Library).
  • Where do I call if I’m having a cable problem?
Call (916) 691-7600, or 1-800-253-5262. Identify your cable company and describe the problem. We’ll check it out from there.
  • Where do I call if I am having trouble with streaming video? Call 691-7149. We will check to see that the stream is working at our end. If it is working, you may need to contact your internet service provider for further instructions.
  • What do I do if I’m not receiving my mail?
If you do not receive mail within a week after the instructor hands it out, call 691-7149 and verify your address. We will then check to see when mail was sent to you and send a second copy if needed.
