Welcome to Skills for Online Student Success at Cosumnes River College. This page has information on how to complete the class orientation, which is required to pass this class.
There are four parts to the orientation (you may want to print this page for future reference):
NOTE: All four parts must be complete by Monday, at noon (California time). I will drop you from the class if you do not complete all four parts.
If you have any questions or need help with completing any of these steps, contact me.
All of our course interactions will take place within the Los Rios eLearning environment, which relies on the D2L learning management system. The first orientation task is to log in to D2L and enter our class site.
The URL for D2L: http://d2l.losrios.edu (opens new window)
To log in you will need to know your username and password for D2L. Your username is the letter "w" plus your student ID number. This is the same username as your eServices account, which you used if you registered for classes online. If you do not have your student ID number memorized, you can find it online. There is a link to the student ID lookup on the D2L login page.
Your password is your Los Rios unified password, which is the same you use with eServices.
When you log in successfully, you will see a personalized My Home page with a link to our class and any other of your classes in Los Rios that are using D2L.
NOTE: You must be officially enrolled in this class before you can proceed further. If you do not see the class link on your D2L My Home page, contact me immediately! |
On your My Home page is a link to our class: HCD320 - Skills for Online Student Success. Click on the class name to enter our class and complete the remaining orientation tasks.
Click on this link in the Content area to see the course syllabus and a short article about academic integrity. You will be quizzed on the syllabus in the next orientation task, which is to take a pre-course assessment online.
One of the navbar links is Quizzes, which is where tests are located. (There is also a link to the quiz in the Content area.) One of those quizzes is the online pre-course assessment. This test will give you a chance to demonstrate that you have read the syllabus and academic integrity documents. I also ask you a few questions about the material we will cover in class together. Contact me immediately if you have any problems with taking this exam.
The final step in the orientation is to post an introduction on the class discussion board. Another navbar link is Discussion, which is where most of our interaction in this class will take place. (There is also a link to the discussion topic in the Content area.) Click on the topic named "Introductions." The final orientation assignment is to post your introduction. Do this by clicking the Start a New Thread button. After you type an introduction (don't forget to click Post button at the bottom of the Compose window), click around to learn something about your classmates. Feel free to reply to me or anyone else.
Once you have posted your introduction you have completed your orientation. Congratulations! I look forward to getting to know you and sailing the seas of the internet with you in this class. Contact me at any time with any questions or concerns. Remember that all four orientation tasks must be complete by Monday, at noon (California time).
